Getting (b)older

Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older, too

Stevie Nicks, 1975

Stevie Nicks was all of 23 when she recorded Landslide; I, merely four years old.

Today (8/18), my beautiful little goddaughter turned 11. ELEVEN!  Seems just yesterday her mama was calling to tell me she’d “failed a test”.

I saw my husband’s niece yesterday. She’s almost 14, in 8th grade, wearing mascara and is taller than I am. (I’m 5’ 8”.) The first time I met that child, she was in a stroller.

My sister’s goddaughter asked for a bra for her birthday. A BRA!

I don’t feel much different than I did at say, 22, but I’m definitely getting older. One of the signs of age is that my friends and I talk about how we can’t believe that these children are growing up. We say things like “Kids today don’t know. We didn’t have no cell phones! We had to share a phone with our entire family! Kids don’t even know what ‘dialing a phone’ means. Or hanging up.”

We have conversations that we never imagined having. We talk about our aches and pains and health issues and midlife crises and the economy and money worries and retirement and the alzheimers we probably already have (and if we get it, how will anyone know)?

So, yeah, I’m getting older. Except, except, I am also getting bolder in my dotage. I worry less about what people think of me. I’m off the rat race and enjoying the life of a starving artist/writer. I’m finally being my true self. I’m singing at the top of my lungs and dancing like no one is watching. (At least I hope no one is watching; after all, I am very very white.) And, at long last, I’m not afeared of changing, and I’m building my life around me. And enjoying the chance to get to know those darling girls as friends.

Love it! You go girl =) I’m trying to get bolder myself. I think I was secretly bold, but I felt like no one gave a crap until I started blogging. When you blog, then the people who care start paying attention and deepening relationships. Yeah! Let’s be as bold as we want! Bolder and wiser, that’s how the saying goes, right?

Gettin’ bolder is a state of mind, not age and you definitely have a bold streak. I’m not as bold as I should be, but I draw confidence from you and others I see taking bold steps. For that I thank you. Oh, and it has nothing to do with height! It does relate to singing and dancing, though.

    Great post, Savannah.

Perfect perception. I’ve passed the “Someday I will..” point in my life. I’m working on the things that create joy in my life. If it pleases others, all the better, if not, so be it.

Whatcha think? Tell me, tell me!
