As y’all know, I’ve been sick, and my illness(es) mean that I’m chronically fatigued and can’t focus on much. Even on books. Which sucks, since I’ve always been a huge reader, and not being able to read is quite the … {insert bad word of your choice}.

This is Gareth. He made me promise not to post the pictures of him fondling a copy of his book.
So my pal Gareth S. Young sent me an ARC of his book, The Wolves of Dynamo, a few weeks back. An electronic document. This is important for you to know for a couple reasons: 1) although I have a Kindle, I pretty much just use it for playing games and 2) I have innumerable books for Kindle that I haven’t read.
Which leads to: 3) I uploaded the book to my Kindle, and idly started reading it, and 4) couldn’t stop. Seriously. I kept reading and reading and reading, and when I’d find a wee error I’d shoot Gareth a message, and I kept reading and reading, and sending messages to Gareth about how much I loved the characters, until I had finished reading the entire book. In one night. Including sending Gareth all those messages. (You can’t take the editor out of the girl…)
So, as you can imagine, I’m super-excited to tell y’all about this book, and to suggest that y’all purchase a copy post-haste and read it.
The Wolves of Dynamo is clearly an homage to comic-book worlds, heroes, and villains, with its own world and characters and good and evil. I adore our main character, Eileen, and the other people in her world. I know you will too.
Blurb:
Thirteen-year-old Eileen MacCormick has always called Dynamo City home. Its bustling streets, imposing Cathedral, and enveloping forest fascinate her, giving her solace after the death of her father. But after moving closer to the forest she finds so comforting, she discovers that it hides a dark, magical world.
Eileen’s life changes irrevocably when she crosses paths with a murderer who is terrorizing the city. Heartsick, she finds herself drawn back to the forest where an enclave of mysterious wolves reveal themselves to her. Eileen is shocked to learn she can communicate with the wolves and outraged when the ancient animals demand she lure the murderer to the forest.
How can these creatures ask this of her? How can a thirteen-year-old possibly catch a killer?
Bewildered by her role in this new magical world, and by the wolves’ extraordinary request, Eileen must battle her sorrow and find courage as she begins the most dangerous and incredible adventure of her life.
Excerpt:
Five minutes passed before she heard yelling and shouting. Seconds later, the young men broke from a patch of trees and ran towards her. She crouched and shielded her head, thinking she was about to be attacked, but they ran straight past her, ignoring her completely, more worried about what was behind them. Something was chasing them.
Eileen stood, looking at the spot the boys had run from. Her heart hammered in her chest and she placed a hand over it to quiet it, but still it pounded like a jackhammer. The hair on her neck stood up and she shivered, her body now telling her to run. A pair of eyes stared at her from the undergrowth. A head poked from the trees and her hands shot to her mouth to stop herself from screaming. She trembled where she stood, ready to turn and run, but she knew she could never outrun it.
