Just google <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/#hl=en&#038;sclient=psy-ab&#038;q=sci+fi+inventions+that+came+true&#038;oq=sci+fi+inventions&#038;gs_l=hp.3.3.0j0i30l3.3023.16414.0.18845.29.17.7.5.5.1.195.2167.0j17.17.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.v5FqBaezxYY&#038;pbx=1&#038;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&#038;fp=e56a924fd8801244&#038;biw=1340&#038;bih=690\" target=\"blank\">sci fi inventions that came true<\/a> and the search engine comes back with \u201cAbout 3,590,000 results\u201d.   (I think this article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cracked.com\/article_18846_6-eerily-specific-inventions-predicted-in-science-fiction.html\" target=\"blank\">cracked.com<\/a> is probably the most interesting.)<\/p>\n<p>But the invention I want the most, the <em>very very<\/em> most, isn\u2019t around. At least not yet. Or, they\u2019re not telling us about it.<\/p>\n<p>I want a <b>transporter<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><------------- Yup, one of these.\n\nI want to step in, and a second later, find myself in Atlanta with my friends and family. Then pop back to Arkansas to feed the varmints (1 dog, 2 cats, 1 turtle, 1 husband), and return to Atlanta. Or go to Greece. Or to the beach. Or anywhere, really. \n\nBut darnit, I cannot. I\u2019m a writer, not a doctor! (Or engineer!) (Or scientist!)\n\nOf course, I have pondered this often, especially in this day and age of social media. I have friends I love dearly who I\u2019ve never met in person. I\u2019m working with publishers and authors whose voices I\u2019ve never heard and faces I\u2019ve never seen.\n\nBut most importantly, it\u2019s a pain in the arse to travel to visit my friends and family and spend time with them.  (You can\u2019t get there from here.)\n\nI just returned from an 18-day trip to Atlanta (where I lived prior to moving to Arkansas). A mission of mercy: helping one of my besties recover from surgery, helping the in-laws, visiting friends and other family I haven\u2019t seen in a while, meeting with a college friend to see about getting her late husband\u2019s poetry published. I spent a lot of time in my in-laws\u2019 car, driving hither and yon. A <em>LOT<\/em> of time.<\/p>\n<p>I flew back here on Saturday (9\/1) (and boy are my arms tired. *ba-dum-tshh*), and before catching the flight, my bestie and I cried and cried. I cried on the plane. I cried today. Because I miss her, and I miss all my other friends. And I don\u2019t know when I\u2019ll get to go back to Atlanta, because driving takes forever and gas is expensive and plane travel is a pain (and not cheap) and dangit, the transporter <em>Star Trek<\/em> promised me hasn\u2019t materialized.<\/p>\n<p>And truly, is a transporter <em>really<\/em> too much to ask?!?!?!!
