(Note: there is actually a fifth photo, but due to glare, and the fact that the frame is 90 years old, and what I did in Photoshop so as to be able to see any of these at all, I took what I could get.) In any event, isn’t she adorable?

Vivian Branden is my beautiful grandmother. She left this mortal coil on June 22 of this year, and it’s taken me this long to be able to write about her. And I’m fairly certain whatever I write this day will not do her justice, especially after receiving an email from my aunt discussing Grandmother’s legacy. (Or, as my aunt started calling her years ago, because of the many relationships my grandmother had with various people: The Viv.)

And why am I writing about The Viv now? you may ask. It’s not gotten any easier, and I type (off and on) through tears, but there’s a simple explanation: today (9/24) would have been (and technically is) my grandmother’s 97th birthday.

There is so much about my grandmother to emulate: her elegance (I was called that once, and fell off my chair laughing), her tact (ditto; I have next to none), her kindness, her generosity. (Those last two, I have.)

She was smart, The Viv. The first woman to graduate from the University of Akron (OH) with a degree in Physics. In 1940. As quoted in a newspaper article from the time, “she wanted to show people that a girl could do it.” (I don’t know know where that math/physics thing went; definitely not my forté.)

Grandmother was musical. She had a lovely singing voice, and my grandfather courted her by giving her sheet music. (I come by that very very honestly.) But she also didn’t mind spontaneous celebrations. And she didn’t mind having her family take her photo. (You’re welcome that I’m not posting more. 😉 )

She liked to bake, and her specialty was chocolate chip cookies. When she learned that my dear hubs is allergic to the nuts she put in the cookies, she made a note and always baked a special batch for him. At her memorial service, my aunt and her friends served those cookies that they had also lovingly baked. (You have no idea how sad I am that I’ll never taste her cookies again. Ones she made with her own two hands. Ones she made with love.)

The Viv was an archiver of family history. Nary a photo was sent to anyone or put into an album without a full list of who was in the photo, where it was taken, and when. She could tell you who was related to whom (or is that whom/who?) and how and where. She kept things. Then she gave them away. I couldn’t visit her without her giving me gas money and something of hers – jewelry, a book; she wanted her family to enjoy her things while she was alive.

In addition to small items I inherited/received from her, like kitchen wear (they don’t make pyrex as pretty as they used to!) and jewelry and photos, I inherited her desk. Lots of people have antique desks that look just like the one I have, but mine is special, because it was my grandmother’s. Because it was a birthday gift from her parents when she was 16 years old. And my mother gifted it to me. And it sits in my studio in a place of honor.

Grandmother’s giving went beyond her death: she donated her body to science. She suffered from dementia the last few years of her life, and I dearly hope that the fresh-faced medical students who are benefiting from her donation are able to look at her brain and learn things that will help others.

I love my grandmother beyond measure, and she loved me. She may not have understood me, or my choices (like, my first divorce), but she never judged me, and never made me feel inadequate or worthless or any of the other million other things I usually feel on a daily basis.

As I wrote about in my post about Terry Pratchett (and where I also explain GNU), and as he himself said eloquently, as long as someone’s name is spoken, they are still here.
