Well, I’ve been afraid of changing

\nToday (8\/18), my beautiful little goddaughter turned 11. ELEVEN!\u00a0 <\/strong>Seems just yesterday her mama was calling to tell me she\u2019d \u201cfailed a test\u201d.<\/p>\n

I saw my husband\u2019s niece yesterday. She\u2019s almost 14, in 8th grade, wearing mascara and is taller than I am.<\/strong> (I\u2019m 5\u2019 8\u201d.) The first time I met that child, she was in a stroller.<\/p>\n

My sister\u2019s goddaughter asked for a bra for her birthday. A BRA!<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t feel much different than I did at say, 22, but I\u2019m definitely getting older. One of the signs of age is that my friends and I talk about how we can\u2019t believe that these children are growing up. We say things like \u201cKids today don\u2019t know<\/em>. We didn\u2019t have no cell phones! We had to share a phone<\/em> with our entire<\/em> family! Kids don\u2019t even know what \u2018dialing a phone\u2019 means. Or hanging up<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

We have conversations that we never<\/em> imagined having. We talk about our aches and pains and health issues and midlife crises and the economy and money worries and retirement and the alzheimers we probably already have (and if we get it, how will anyone know)?<\/p>\n

So, yeah, I’m getting older. Except, except<\/em>, I am also getting bolder<\/em><\/strong> in my dotage. I worry less about what people think of me. I’m off the rat race and enjoying the life of a starving artist\/writer. I\u2019m finally being my true self. I\u2019m singing at the top of my lungs and dancing like no one is watching. (At least I hope<\/em> no one is watching; after all, I am very very<\/em> white.) And, at long last, I\u2019m not afeared of changing, and I\u2019m building my life around me.<\/em> And enjoying the chance to get to know those darling girls as friends.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
