(The image above is the record of the request.) And oddly enough, I started chatting with the person who sent it to me, one Brandi Klepfer. You know, just through the site. Until our messages became so long and extensive, that we decided to start emailing. And facebooking. And chatting, like on the phone. And talking about books. And we decided we’re twinkies, because we have so much in common.

Then my hubby and I drove to Texas to meet her. And then she drove up to Arkansas to hang out with me. Several visits followed. Her kid even likes me. (I call her Spawn.) (And I think she’s pretty awesome.) I’m fairly certain her husband Sherman likes me too, but he’s pretty quiet. I’m not sure he’ll ever quite forgive me for the time Brandi came to visit, on her own, even though he told her not to, and a freak snowstorm hit, and we lost power… I even named a character in my book after Brandi, a language arts teacher, because she loves words and grammar as much as I do.

Now here’s the remarkable thing: I have been a member of PaperBackSwap.com since 12/23/2005. Since that time, I have mailed 323 books, and received 273 (with all those books traveling a combined total of 539,194 miles). And Brandi is the ONLY person this happened with. But the universe works in mysterious ways – because my life is so much better since she’s in it. She’s become one of my very dearest friends, all thanks to the Sweet Potato Queen, Jill Connor Browne, and PaperBackSwap.com.

For some strange reason, Brandi really wanted to answer The Questions. Since I’m a giving person, and her answers amused me ~ and may amuse you too ~ what kind of friend would I be if I said no?

About Brandi (in her words):

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1255" data-attachment-id="1255" data-permalink="https://dsavannah.com/blog/index.php/the-questions-klepfer/twinks1/" data-orig-file="https://dsavannah.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/twinks1.jpg" data-orig-size="1230,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.6","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D60","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1278740013","copyright":"","focal_length":"55","iso":"400","shutter_speed":"0.01","title":""}" data-image-title="twinks1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The twinkies. She unselfishly posted all of it on her Facebook page, and I’m blatantly stealing the list. (BTW, she listed me first. As well she should have! :))

The Questions

2. If your phone lets you have custom ringtones, what song do you use for your:

Mom: Hockey Night in Canada theme song

Both Sisters: I Am Canadian

Brother #1: Big Bang Theory theme song; Brother #2: Pinky & The Brain theme song (neither of my brothers EVER call me, so I’m not sure why I have even assigned them ringtones)

Significant other: Kiss An Angel Good Morning

Best friend: Pirates of the Caribbean theme song or OMG Shoes, whichever BF it is

(dSavannah note: guess which one is mine?)

4. What’s the worst meal you’ve ever eaten and where?

The only thing that comes to mind is cold pea soup at the home of some family friends when I was young (like maybe pre-teens?). They were from Quebec. I don’t remember ANYTHING else about that night except for this awful thick, COLD soup with a horrible texture. I was supposed to eat it and then pretend to enjoy it…. I don’t even remember if I succeeded with the eating. I know I failed at the enjoying. And I’m not sure anyone else at the table (except for maybe our host family) ate it and liked it…. and I’m sure I’ve eaten other, equally horrid food, but that’s the one which has apparently made the strongest impression.

6. What do you want on your tombstone?

I don’t want a headstone, because I want to be cremated and my ashes split between Alberta and Texas. (Sherman threatens to spread the Alberta ashes across the highest COLDEST peak of the Canadian Rockies, just because I HATE being cold…. But really, that would be okay [see answer to question 23 below])…. Sherman and Spawn will have to find meaningful places for my ashes to be buried or scattered. Or kept in bourbon bottles on someone’s mantle or bookshelf. Whatever they choose is fine with me, cuz well, I’ll be dead and it really won’t matter…. However, if they don’t follow my wishes (which will result in haunting like there’s never been before – because apparently I WILL know if my wishes haven’t been followed…heeheee…), then “She Mattered” would suffice.

(dSavannah note: My share of your ashes will be kept in a martini glass on my bookshelf. Just FYI.)

17. What is your biggest regret?

It makes me sad that I just now realized how much amazing information and experience I have had access to, had I simply asked or actually listened to people in my life. Some of those people are gone now and with them, that great store of information and experience and mistakes NOT to make. Information that I’m finding that I’d REALLY like to have these days. I’m trying really hard not to let that happen with the people who are still alive around me. Who knows what I’ll want to know 20 years from now that I can learn from someone in my life now?

23. Where is your heart home and why?

I have only recently discovered that my heart home is the mountains. It really doesn’t matter WHICH mountains, although the Canadian Rockies of Alberta are my first “mountain” love…. Every time I drive to the Ozarks to see you (dSavannah note: obviously, she means me!), my heart fills up just seeing them on the horizon. The Smokey Mountains did the same thing when we drove from Texas to Maine…. the American Rockies will do in a pinch as well. I find this quite confusing about myself, as I HATE being cold and I don’t want to actually LIVE in the mountains… but as soon as I see mountains on the horizon I hear “home” whispered in my heart. Maybe it’s that I’ve just now become aware of this particular peculiarity about myself that I can’t really explain it or wrap my head around it. It seems that mountains bring me peace, just because they are there. Their majesty, their age, their breathtaking beauty. I’m pretty sure that it has something to do with growing up next to them and now, I don’t live anywhere even close to a set of mountains. They were always my compass when I was growing up. I knew that the mountains were west of me. I could then find my direction. Ask anyone and I’m so completely directionally challenged at this point that even my GPS gets pissed off at me sometimes.

(dSavannah note: This is true. Her GPS starts cursing her. But it’s in a posh British accent, so she really doesn’t mind. Much.)

34. Why did you agree to this interview?

Hm. I believe I’ll let everyone think that you asked me to do this.

(dSavannah note: Uh, yeah. That’s how that went.)

35. Tell me one random fact about you that not a lot of people know.

I bear a scar on the heel of my left foot as a result of a blood test done at the hospital when I was born. Apparently, the custom at the time was to nick the heel of the infant with a scalpel to get blood for whatever the blood tests are that they do for infants. (When Spawn was born, they pricked her finger, much like they do at the doctor’s office for adults.) I’m not exactly sure how much blood was supposed to be gathered from the tests, but I have a scar that is almost a 1/2” long where the nurse got a little too zealous in her slicing. Can you imagine how deep it had to have been then for it to STILL be a deep enough scar that pedicurists ALWAYS ask about it? PS. I realized this is not a very titillating or “cool” random fact about me… but I’m really not a very intriguing person so it’s the best I can come up with at this time.

(dSavannah note: She’s actually quite interesting. But then, I did say we are twinkies, right? So chances are, I’d find her recitation of the phone book intriguing.)

dSavannah note: So there you have it.
