My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. And only three letters left… … wisdom teeth So. I have all of my wisdom teeth, which is odd, for a woman of 45 years. Most people have their wisdom teeth taken out when they are young, generally because there isn’t room in their mouth for them. Not me. I have plenty of room. My former hygienist just loved saying how I “have a big mouth”. Seriously. She thought it was the funniest thing ever. But now, I need to have my wisdom teeth out, and of course, it’s not the easy thing it is for most people. Heck, my … Continue reading

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. … vision, pt 1 So, I just read this really interesting article/post/Facebook note by a dude who is a software engineer. This guy, Blake Ross (that link is to his very own Wikipedia page), has just learned that most people can visualize things in their mind. He can’t. He has a condition known as aphantasia, or “a life without imagery.” Or, as he put it, a “blind mind’s eye”. The condition only just this past year received its official medical name. Because, who goes around thinking that something you experience every day isn’t something everyone experiences every day? (For me, … Continue reading

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me.  … thyroid The thyroid is a “butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck”. It produces a variety of hormones that “act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature” (webmd.com). So needless to say, the thyroid is pretty important in your overall health. There are tons of autoimmune disorders that have to do with the thyroid, and they are fairly common. Off the top of my head, I can think of four other people with thyroid issues. Both men and women can have thyroid problems, tho women are more likely to experience issues, … Continue reading

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. … Rest In Peace Lemme tell you, chronic fatigue and insomnia are not friends. I was awake for 24 hours, then slept for 22, and woke up to an email from musician/writer Alex Woodward that Prince had died. And then of course, as I scrolled through my Facebook feed, people shared their Prince stories, and his music, and how much he meant to them, and how sad they are. This year has not been kind to our celebrities and people who shaped our generation, and thus our collective consciousness. So much sadness. So much loss. And then, just a few … Continue reading

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. … Questions One of the most difficult things about being a Sick Person is all the questions I have. Questions that seemingly have no answers, that lead down a rabbit hole to more questions. With no real answers. Of course, the biggest question of them all is: WHY?!?!? followed closely on its heels by: WHY   ME !??!?    !?!?     ?? And there’s no answer to either one of those. The big WHY is a question that is best to let go of. It’s not productive, and can actually be hurtful. Even tho it’s the most natural question in the world to … Continue reading

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. … paperwork The absolute bane of my existence as a Sick Person is … paperwork. You’d probably guess something else, like, being in pain or the anti-mold diet or medications, or simply being sick, but not. It’s the {insert expletive} paperwork I have to fill out. Every.single.doctor has their own set. And then my insurance company keeps sending me stupid surveys to complete. And as I (possibly) mentioned in another post, I created a spreadsheet to keep up with the meds I have to take (and I save each week’s completed piece of paper), and a document listing all my … Continue reading

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. This is part 2 of my I post, since I ran out of time to write everything I wanted to in Part 1. … imaging In the medical world, imaging is “creating images of the human body or parts of it, to diagnose or examine disease” (thanks, Wikipedia, for the easy definition). Types of imaging include X-rays (my topic for the letter X in the 2015 challenge), MRIs, CT-Scans, ultrasounds, endoscopy, and more. (I have had all of these tests done.) (Last year, I had *ten* imaging studies done. *Ten*. And they still don’t know what’s really wrong with me.) … Continue reading
