#MEAwareness: Guest Post on Life with ME

MEAction

dSavannah note: You may have noticed I haven’t published anything since May 12, #MEAwareness / #MillionsMissing Day. All of that advocacy wore me slap out (and I don’t think I’ve recovered yet). A friend in one of my MEcfs support groups, Jonathan, took almost two months to write this to share with his family and friends to educate them on his reality. I asked if I could publish it on my blog, and he said yes. What you are reading is exactly as he wrote it (so any typos are his, not mine for once. ha!). Dear friends and family, This is a message from Jonathan. The impetus for this message is that May was ME/CFS awareness month, but I also wanted to update you on what … Continue reading

Let’s talk about disability insurance

disabilities_look-like

This is a hard topic for me to write about, but: it’s important. And it also fits in with my mission to Shine A Light Into the Dark Places, the stigmatized places, the places no one wants to look at or talk about. And one of those places is disability, and specifically, disability insurance. I see sooo soo many people on twitter and other social media platforms crowdfunding things like – fish oil for their kid, or an audible membership, or a wheelchair, or funds toward a new apartment. Look under the hashtag #DisabilityWishlists, and get ready to cry at all the things people need. And if you have any money to spare, which trust me, unless you too are disabled, you actually do, pick … Continue reading

#IWSG – So you want to be a writer…. (pt 8)

Insecure Writers Support Group

Once again, it is time for me to ramble on writing for the Insecure Writers Support monthly post. In the past, I have written about things you should be doing as a writer. However, this is the: What *NOT* to do Edition. There are jillions of articles on what to do if you want to be a writer, but not too many on what you should NOT do. So using my vast knowledge of all of those things (which means, either YES I have done it, or YES I have had it done to me), I shall impart my words of wisdom. DO NOT visit a big bookstore and get discouraged because it is filled to the brim with other books and then think “what … Continue reading

All I can do is cry…

Chelsea

I wanted to write a post about having gratitude even in the midst of being a Sick Person, but then death smacked me upside the head a few days ago, and then social media flooded with stories of the woman attacked and sexually assaulted by the Stanford student (whose name I refuse to speak), and the lenient sentence he got, and … I just can’t. All I can do is cry. I cry for the victim of that horrible crime, even as I applaud ‘Emily Doe’s’ courage in writing and reading her Victim Statement, and sharing it with the world. It is hard to read. (But I hope you do.) It makes me cry more. But it is also hopeful. That maybe what she went … Continue reading

#dSavannahDefects – R is for…

R

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. … Rest In Peace Lemme tell you, chronic fatigue and insomnia are not friends. I was awake for 24 hours, then slept for 22, and woke up to an email from musician/writer Alex Woodward that Prince had died. And then of course, as I scrolled through my Facebook feed, people shared their Prince stories, and his music, and how much he meant to them, and how sad they are. This year has not been kind to our celebrities and people who shaped our generation, and thus our collective consciousness. So much sadness. So much loss. And then, just a few … Continue reading

#dSavannahDefects – F is for…

F

…fatigue If I need to quickly define my health issues, I say I have “chronic fatigue and chronic pain”. (Cuz even *I* can’t remember all 20-something of my diagnoses.) As I described depression as being sad times 1,000, fatigue is being tired times 1,000. Times a million. I just ran across a site called “Mis-Treated“, about a woman’s search for answers to health problems. As I’ve clicked and clicked and read a bunch of posts, I’m mentally jumping up and down (cuz physically jumping up and down would hurt). She is writing about ME. About MY Story. About dealing with being chronically ill and disabled. She wrote a very cogent post, “Five Reasons Fatigue Isn’t Like Normal Tiredness (Proving Most People Don’t Get It)“. And … Continue reading

Cover Reveal: Wrath & Bones by A.J. Aalto

header

As usual, I’m a day late and (thousands of) dollar short: I was supposed to publish this Cover Reveal *yesterday*, and after I BEGGED the author, A.J. Aalto, to do a cover reveal. Sigh. (And hangs my head in shame.) But, as usual, life happened, so here I am, finally revealing the cover I begged to show. I know A.J. from Facebook (not IRL; she lives in Canada), and I find her to be a hilarious and awesome individual. To get her writing done, she gets up at 4am. That’s about when I’m going to sleep, usually. We have lots of fun sparring and chatting on Facebook. If we got together in person, you’d probably need to call the SWAT team on us. (I kid, … Continue reading
