#IWSG – So you want to be a writer…. (pt 6)

grumpy_perfect_words

In my last episode in this series, I told you that you need to get used to disappointment as a writer. And to develop thick skin. In this episode, I want to talk about the dreaded C word: criticism. I can’t tell you how many writers I’ve run across who think the words they’ve written were handed down by God himself (or Goddess herself) and not one single word should be changed. This topic came to me because a writer in one of my online groups was complaining about how much she hated criticism of her work. I get it. We slave over the storyline and characters, and it’s our baby, and we want everyone to love it. My very own book, A Spicy Secret, … Continue reading

Q is for…

Q

So, I’ve been blogging every day for three weeks straight, and boy are my arms tired! (Ba-dum!) Anywho… I’m obviously delusional from tiredness, but it’s now day something-or-other, the day for the letter Q. I thought about writing about quirks, but probably everyone participating in the #AtoZchallenge2014 is doing that, since us creatives are, by definition, quirky, so I’m going back to my tried-and-true dictionary method. Only this time I’m consulting my 1921 edition of Collier’s New Encyclopedia, subhead: “A Loose Leaf and Self Revising Reference Work” (which I’ve never quite figured out how that erm, worked, exactly), Book 7, Ochre to Resorcin. And the winner for Q (boy, I had to flip quite a few pages to get to this section, and it’s all … Continue reading

F is for…

F

Once again, I’ve come upon a letter that has stumped me. I mean, I can’t very well talk about my favorite word that starts with that letter (and rhymes with yuck)… again, trying to keep it clean for the audience back home… tho I have many many witnesses as to my using that ever-so-helpful and stress-relieving word… And I really wanted to use it this morning, when something went horribly awry with my web server and my blog went down. (Otherwise, this would have been posted at 10am or so!) So I turned to my friends for ideas. The Book Hipster herself suggested suggested that I discuss friends, and although I do luuurrrveee my friends (some more so than others, ha ha!), and could wax … Continue reading

My #BlogAversary! – Answers to the Trivia Questions

blog_header

For those of you who played the Trivia Contest, here are the correct answers! I’ve also included the link where you could/can find the answer, as well as the most creative ~ but wrong ~ guesses {if there were any}. I had a marvelous time reading what y’all came up with. A special thanks to Betsy and Christopher, who played every single day! (I think that deserves an extra prize, don’t you?!?!) #BlogAversary! – Day 1 1. How many people have answered The Questions? Correct answer: 44 Where you can find this info: Obviously, there are several ways. The easiest would be to click on the link “About the Questions” and count the number of names. Of course, this is a trick question, as two … Continue reading

My Favorite Lines from the #OrangeKaren Anthology

#TeamOrange

If you missed all of my #TeamOrange posts, I am a proud member of a group of writers who banded together to create the anthology Orange Karen: A Tribute to a Warrior, with all proceeds going to help fellow writer Karen DeLabar (yup, that girl in the banner with the orange hair) and her family pay for medical expenses associated with her bout with Toxic Shock Syndrome last year. Because I’m a part of this project, it’s against the rules to write a review on Amazon or Goodreads. (Something about bias. ) But I can do whatever I want on my blog, which is tell you I’m super-proud to be a part of this anthology. It truly has something for everyone – some fantasy, horror, … Continue reading

The Questions with Jerry Gentry: #TeamOrange edition

orange_header

As I’ve said in previous posts, I am a proud member of #TeamOrange, a group of writers who banded together to create the anthology Orange Karen: A Tribute to a Warrior, with all proceeds going to help fellow writer Karen DeLabar and her family pay for medical expenses associated with her bout with Toxic Shock Syndrome. Guest #7 (my lucky number) for the #TeamOrange edition of The Questions is Jerry Gentry. Like so many of my guests, I met Jerry online in a writers’ group, and we hit it off immediately. Sadly, we have never met in person, but Facebook put our pics together once, so it’s only a matter of time before we get to meet IRL. (We hope.) (And don’t ask me why … Continue reading

So, I haven’t been blogging… pt 1

As you may (or more likely not) have noticed, other than my post on voting, I haven’t been blogging for the last few weeks. Instead, I’ve been editing. (Future posts will talk about the other things I’ve been doing.) I’m lucky enough to get to work with some awesome authors on their books. I go through their manuscript with my red pen (okay, track changes, which I actually have set up to be teal) and point out grammatical errors, typos, loose ends, things I don’t quite understand, word choices that don’t seem quite right, motivations or character traits that don’t seem to fit, etc. etc. etc. (I also point out areas that I think are great, so you don’t think I’m all mean. I do … Continue reading
