Book Launch: What Girls Are Made Of

Not me. My grandmother. But also, a girl.

In case my dear readers haven’t noticed, I’m a girl. I was born a girl, I’ll die a girl. (Sans some parts, cuz, well, some of them were bad.) I’m also a feminist, which means I believe in equality for the sexes. And, as I’ve written about before, I’ve suffered abuse because I’m a girl. And sexual harassment. And mistreatment in the workplace because I’m a girl. And I’m afraid of many, many things that men cannot even fathom, because they are men and I’m a girl. Which leads me to this book, What Girls Are Made Of, which launches today. I first encountered this author’s work when I was able to request her children’s book Far From Fair from Amazon Vine (the super-secret group … Continue reading

#IWSG – So you want to be a writer…. (pt 8)

Insecure Writers Support Group

Once again, it is time for me to ramble on writing for the Insecure Writers Support monthly post. In the past, I have written about things you should be doing as a writer. However, this is the: What *NOT* to do Edition. There are jillions of articles on what to do if you want to be a writer, but not too many on what you should NOT do. So using my vast knowledge of all of those things (which means, either YES I have done it, or YES I have had it done to me), I shall impart my words of wisdom. DO NOT visit a big bookstore and get discouraged because it is filled to the brim with other books and then think “what … Continue reading

#dSavannahDefects – I is for… (pt 2)

I_2

My theme this year for the #AtoZchallenge is #dSavannahDefects, aka “What’s it’s like dealing with #InvisibleIllnesses”. Or, in short, {some of} what’s wrong with me. This is part 2 of my I post, since I ran out of time to write everything I wanted to in Part 1. … imaging In the medical world, imaging is “creating images of the human body or parts of it, to diagnose or examine disease” (thanks, Wikipedia, for the easy definition). Types of imaging include X-rays (my topic for the letter X in the 2015 challenge), MRIs, CT-Scans, ultrasounds, endoscopy, and more. (I have had all of these tests done.) (Last year, I had *ten* imaging studies done. *Ten*. And they still don’t know what’s really wrong with me.) … Continue reading

#dSavannahDefects – H is for…

H

dSavannah note: I actually wrote this post some months ago but never published it (for no apparent reason), and found it when preparing for the #AtoZChallenge. Thought it was appropriate for my theme. Also, ironically (or is it coincidentally? or both?) I have a whopper of a headache today as I finish this up and publish it. One of the wonderful things about me (that’s sarcasm, by the way) is that I’m a little barometer. If there’s a storm front coming in, I get a headache, and those often turn into migraines (which I’ll write about for M.) (And no idea why I’ve got this particular headache. The radar doesn’t show anything suspicious…) I also want to point out that I do know that not … Continue reading

#dSavannahDefects – B is for…

B

… balance I kind of feel hypocritical writing about balance when I’m sooo not balanced in my life, no matter how hard I try. My sleep is out of whack (I’m writing this at 2:35am, and yes, I’m more often than not awake at this time), I hardly have any IRL friends left, my husband gets frustrated with me, and I get frustrated with me too. But balance is something we all need to strive for. You hear about work-life balance a lot, but what does it really mean? You’re supposed to have time for your hobbies and passions and friends and still get satisfaction from your work activities. But… The “normal” work week for someone with a full-time job is 40 hours, but even … Continue reading

GNU Pat Conroy

Me with Pat Conroy, Sept. 2015. He was tickled I

On Friday, the world lost another great voice with the death of author Pat Conroy, who passed away of pancreatic cancer at age 70, just four weeks after his diagnosis. When I read the news about the cancer, I knew he wouldn’t last long. I wish I hadn’t been right. I was introduced to his work my freshman year at college. I was “dating” (using the term incredibly loosely) a guy who gave me a copy of The Prince of Tides. I don’t remember exactly what he said when he gave it to me; just something about how I should read it. You probably need to know several things about me before I tell you how the book impacted me, in order to understand the why. … Continue reading

#IWSG – So you want to be a writer…. (pt 5)

IWSG_New_Badge

So it’s time once again for my ramblings on the craft of writing for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, or #IWSG. I didn’t end up writing anything for January or February (bad me), even tho I’m supposed to write something on the first Wednesday of every month. They didn’t kick me out of the club (hooray!), so I’m still blog #187. Not that the number matters. Being a Sick Person means that time sorta runs together, and before I knew it, the first Wednesday of January had gone by, and then the first Wednesday of February was gone too. Shame on me. However, I’m actually writing this in mid-February, to get ready. I’m sure I’ll be reading and re-reading and writing and re-writing this post … Continue reading
